To buy a Railpass or not to buy a Railpass

Hello,

I have the following travel plans:

Madrid - Barcelona (return)

Barcelona - Monistrol de Montserrat (return)

Madrid - Cordoba - Serville (return)

Madrid - Toledo (return)

Madrid - Segovia (return)

In this case, would you advise to buy a rail pass or it would be cheaper to go with separate tickets?

Thanks very much.

Regards,

Jon

Hello Jon,

Thanks for the question.

With reference to your Itinerary, as you will be traveling to many cities, Eurail Spain Pass is advised for your travel.

To purchase the Pass click "Here".

As there are no trains to Monistrol de Montserrat, the closest train station is Barcelona itself. You will need to travel by local transport from Barcelona to Monistrol de Montserrat which has to be checked locally and the total time is approximately 60 minutes.

Keep in mind that seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will receive pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass. With a Pass you can travel on regional/intercity trains within a country.

Kindly note that pass seats can be reserved by clicking on "I have a rail Pass" on the home page of our website under "Book Train tickets" & then select the name of the pass and feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on "Search". Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares.

Hope this helps!!!

Kind Regards,

Leora, Rail Europe Travel Expert.

Many thanks for your prompt response. I noticed that there are two kinds of railpasses: one for days and one for journeys. Does journey refer to one-way or return?

Many thanks again.

Hello Jon,

Thanks for your reply.

We also have Renfe Spain Pass which is based on the journey's you take and the validity you have to choose from is 4, 6, 8 or 10 journeys. 1 way direct journey is counted as 1 journey. If the train has 1 connection, it will be counted as 2 journey's. For return trip on a direct train without any connection for both the routes, it will be considered as 2 journey's.

With a Renfe Spain Pass, seat reservation is included and hence you do not have to purchase any additional seat reservations. You will need to retrieve the seat reservations locally from the train station prior your journey and travel.

You can compare the cost of both the Passes and check if the validity day of Renfe Spain Pass is as per your Itinerary and the schedules as well and book as per your convenience.

Hope this helps!!!

Kind Regards,
