Recommendation on Eurail Pass

Hi there,

Myself and a friend are intending to travel to Europe in 2018 as per the following itinerary below and we have the following questions to ask:

Munich > Berlin > Prague > Krakow > Vienna > Budapest > Zagreb > Ljubljana > Salzburg

1. Based on the itinerary above, would it be advisable to get a Eurail Global Pass for 15 days? If not, what will be recommended?

2. If we do get the Eurail Global Pass for 15 days, will it be right to say that we still have to specify the specific country to country destination under the pass? How does this work?

3. As we intend to do a sleep over on the train, how much does the reservation cost? Is this a additional cost on top of the Eurail Global Pass (15 Consecutive days)

4. One of us will be 28 in 2018, and the other 27, does this mean that we will have to travel 1st class indefinitely? Or do we still have the option to choose 2nd Class? How do we go about purchasing the tickets as I understand that there are youth discounts up till age 27?

5. Regardless of the type of rail passes purchased, none of it can be used on domestic metro lines?

Thanks in advance

Regards,

HS

Hi Hong Sheng Ng,

Thanks for the question.

As you will be traveling extensively, you can purchase Eurail Global Pass for your travel.

To purchase the Pass click "Here".

1. You will need to select the validity in your Pass depending on your Itinerary and travel date.

A travel day is from 12:00 am to 23:59 pm during which you can take as many trips as you wish.

2. With a Eurail Global Pass, you can travel to 28 countries within Europe. Hence you do not have to specify the countries you will be traveling to. You can check the countries on the Pass page under "Overview".

3. Keep in mind that seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will receive pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass. With a Pass you can travel on regional/intercity trains within a country.

4. Youth age is from 12 to 27 years. Hence 27 year old passenger can purchase Youth Pass and 28 year old passenger can purchase Adult Pass. Please note, 2nd class fare is only available for Youth Pass and not for Adult Pass.

With a 1st class Pass you can travel in 1st class and 2nd class. However, with a 2nd class Pass you can only travel in 2nd class.

If you wish to receive "Saver discount" which is for 2 to 5 adult passengers traveling together, you can purchase 2 Adult Passes if both the passengers will be traveling together at all time. You can compare the price of 1 Adult Pass - 1 Youth Pass and 2 Adult Passes with Saver Pass and see the difference in price and you can book accordingly.

5. Metro travel and public transport is not included in the Eurail Pass. You can check under "Benefits" section on the Pass page to view the additional benefits offered with the Pass.

Kindly note that pass seats can be reserved by clicking on "I have a rail Pass" on the home page of our website under "Book Train tickets" & then select the name of the pass and feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on "Search". Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares.

Hope this helps!!!

Kind Regards,

Hi Leora,

Thank You for your quick and informative response. They are very much helpful.

I would like to clarify on the following below:

1. With the purchase of the Eurail Global Pass, does this mean that as long as we turn up at the train station in each country respectively according to the train schedule, we can board the train that goes to our next destination, is that how the pass works?

2. On board the train, I understand that the train conductor will check the passes. Since we've purchased the Eurail Global Pass, is it still necessary to write down the destination to destination of the countries on we're travelling to on the pass as I understand there'll be a fine if we do not do so.

Kind Regards,

Hong Sheng

Hello Hong Sheng,

Thanks for your reply.

Kindly note that Seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will receive pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass. With a Pass you can travel on regional/intercity trains within a country.

With a valid Pass and seat reservations, you can board the train at the respective country.

Along with the Pass, you will receive a Pass report where you will need to enter the following information.

- Departure train station.

- Arrival train station.

- Departure date.

- Departure and Arrival time.

- Mode of transport (Train, Bus, Boat)

To begin using your pass, you will need to go to the ticket window at the railway station before boarding your first train and have a railroad official enter the first and last day of the validity on your pass. The railroad official will also stamp your pass and you will have to show your passport. All persons travelling on the Pass will have to be present.

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Hong Sheng Ng,

Thanks for your reply.

4h is 4:00, 6h is 6:00, 8h is 8:00 which is the time and AM and PM will be mentioned on the website and you have to purchase seat reservations according to your preferred travel time.

Seat reservations are at a discounted price with a Pass.

As fares are dynamic and subject to change, we unfortunately, cannot give fare quotations. All available fares are displayed on our website. It would be best if you check directly on our website.

Hope this helps!!!

Kind Regards,

Leora, Rail Europe Travel Expert.
