Over charging by Euro Rail

I booked a ticket online from Budapest to Vienna and back.

The website charged me Eur 120 which I had to cancel since the travel dates did

not meet my requirement. I eventually bought the ticket from Budapest Keleti

for EUR 38.77. How can the cost for the same journey be so different? Why would

you want to send the ticket by post and not offer e-ticket, which is what

resulted in my travel dates changing automatically on the Euro rail booking

site and i had to cancel the travel and I incurred loss of Euro 52.88 for no

fault of mine. I am really disappointed with the transaction

Hello Jayant,

Thanks for the question.

As fares are dynamic and subject to change, we unfortunately, cannot give fare quotations. All available fares are displayed on our website. It would be best if you check directly on our website.

There are 3 printing options on the website i.e. Paper Ticket , Print @ Home and Print @ station and different sectors have different printing options which is set by the managing railways.

There is only 1 printing option for your sector which is Paper Ticket and it will be shipped to your address. As Print @ Home option is not available for your sector, E ticket cannot be issued.

Kindly provide your 8 digit booking number so that I can check regarding the same.

Awaiting your reply.

Kind Regards,

Hi Leora, The booking number is 43093808. My grievence is that I bought a ticket 4 hours later from Budapest keleti at 1/ 3rd cost. I had to cancel the ticket booked through Rail Europe since I could not have travelled on dates printed on tickets (which got changed while booking). I was charged penalty of Eur 52.88 which is higher than the actual fare. I expect this amount to be refunded to me. Thanks and Regards, Jayant

Hi Leora, I am chasing you on this forum since I am not satisfied with the response that I have received via email. I will take it to a forum where I am heard. I am not convinced that I should be paying a penalty more than the cost of the ticket. I actually travelled from Budapest to Vienna by the same train on 28-Apr by paying just Eur 38.77. The penalty that you have charged for cancellation is Eur 52. I will keep chasing and raising it in all possible forums till I get my refund. Kind Regards, Jayant

Hello Jayant,

Thanks for the reply.

Prior going ahead with the website, we advise to check the fare details tab which is mentioned below Select fare on the website. Details about the booking along with the travel date is also stated on the website which you can check before going ahead.

There is a tab where you will need to click on "I agree to the Terms and conditions".

The cost break up is provided to you over email and below is the same explanation.

Seat reservations of 20 Euros is Non refundable, booking fees and shipping fees are non refundable which equals upto 12 + 4.50 + 4.50 Euros which is 21 Euros.

Penalty fees which is 15%, amount charged is total 11.88 Euros. Hence the total of all this is 52.88 Euros.

Hope this clarifies!

Kind Regards,

Hi Leora, We buy a brand because we trust it and believe that the price that you are being charged is an honest price. Similarily when I visited Rail Europe portal, I trusted that the fare charged to me would be the correct fare, hence, I did not cross check elsewhere. But my trust is shattered since Rail Europe charged me Euro 120 for something that I could buy for Euro 38.77 from the railway station the same day. Nothing justifies this much premium being charged to me. I am fine with the penalty, but what is hurting is that the penalty of Euro 52.88 that Euro Rail is charging is more than the cost of the ticket that actual costs Eur 38.77 of travel. Hello Jayant,

The ticket amount for Budapest to Vienna and Vienna to Budapest is EUR 39.60 for each sector.

Seat reservation is 10 Euros each sector in your booking.

Booking fees are charged per person per sector which is 9 Euros (4.5 Euros each sector)

As these are Paper Tickets, delivery fees of 12 Euros is charged.

Tickets purchased locally at the train station are subject to availability hence we advise to purchase prior your travel date.

Please note, the After Sales Policy for each sector differs which is ste by the manaing railways.

Kind Regards,

Leora, Rail Europe Travel Expert.

Hi Leora

The return ticket from Budapest to Vienna is Eur 38.77. I am attaching the copy of tickets for you to see yourself. I am not even debating the other cost. Getting back to the same point, that I used Euro rail website with the trust that it will charge me an honest price. Later, when I buy ticket from else where for the same train journey, I realize I have been over charged. Even the cancellation fee is more than the cost of the ticket. This is not fair and Euro rail should refund the extra cost

Hello Jayant,

Delivery fees are charged for Paper Tickets which is 12 Euros and that is non refundable. Bookings fees are charged per person per sector which is non refundable hence no refund can be provided for that as well.

Refund is provided for the ticket amount as per the After Sales Policy and not for the delivery fees and booking fees.

The penalty fees charged in your ticket is 5.94 Euro for each sector.

Kind Regards,

Leora, Rail Europe Travel Expert.

Hi Leora

That Still does not explain, how can you Euro Rail Charge Eur 52 for a ticket which costs Eur 38.77. The delivery fee, booking fee, penalty fee sum up to Eur 52. All this for a product which costs Eur 38.77. This is some irony of sorts. Nothing but fleecing people. I do not understand why should people should buy it from Euro Rail.

Hello Jayant,

Booking fees and Delivery fees(for Paper Tickets) are standard for all the bookings irrespective of the fare that you booked. Even if the fare is minimum, booking fees and delivery fees (for Paper Tickets) will be charged.

Kindly note the bifurcation of your booking.

Booking fees - EUR 9 (EUR 4.5 each)

Vienna to Budapest ticket - EUR 39.60

Budapest to Vienna - EUR 39.60

Seat reservations for each sector - EUR 20 (EUR 10 each)

Delivery fees - EUR 12.

The total amounts to EUR 120.20

All the above details are mentioned on the website which can be checked prior going ahead with the booking.

The total refund amount that you received is EUR 67.32.

Kind Regards,

Leora, Rail Europe Travel Expert.

I have attached the tickets, please see these yourself. The return fare (Budapest-Vienna-Budapest) is Eur 38.77. You are saying one way fare is Eur 39.60, which is incorrect. Please click on the attachment below and you can see the tickets. That is the reason I am complaining. You are charging Euro 79.20 for the return fare whereas the actual return fare is Euro 38.77. Copies of tickets are attached

Regards

Jayant
