Mandtory seat reservation

I have bought a 3-countries pass for Austria, Hungary and Germany. Below is my itinerary routes. Please advise which sectors are mandatory to book a seat in advance. Seat reservations are not cheap thus I will only reserve seats in advance for the routes which is required. I read on your website that in general only routes in France and Italy require a seat reservation. But i was also told intercountry and high speed trains require seat reservations. Please define and advise on below.

Budapest to Vienna

Vienna to Graz

Graz to Vienna

Vienna to Munich

Munich to Fussen

Hello,

As per the itinerary you can follow and book as below for seat reservation:

- Munich to Salzburg - seat reservation not required on Eurocity and Railjet train.

- Salzburg to Halstatt and return:

Salzburg to Attnang Pucheim - seat reservation not mandatory however recommended.

Attnang Puchheim to Hallstatt - seat reservation not required.

- Salzburg to Zell Am See - Regional Express train only seat reservation not required. Pass Not valid on S Bahn train.

- Zell Am See to Budapest - Zell Am See to Vienna - seat reservation not required on regional experess and Railjet train.

Vienna to Budapest - Direct Railjet train - seat reservation not mandatory however recommended.

- Budapest to Vienna - Direct Railjet train - seat reservation not mandatory however recommended.

- Vienna to Graz and return - Intercity train no seat reservation required. Railjet train seat reservation not mandatory however recommended.

- Vienna to Munich - seat reservation not mandatory however recommended.

- Munich to Fussen - Regional trains - seat reservation not required.

- Fussen to Munich - Regional trains - seat reservation not required.

Note that Munich to Munich Airport - only on S Bahn trains you can travel free with the pass. For other transports pass is not valid.

In order to book seat reservations, please visit our website.

The pass seats can be reserved by clicking on “Seat Reservations” & feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on “search tickets”. Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares.

Please click on the “Fare Details” tab to view details regarding the type of fare, type of seat, whether a reservation is included or not and the After Sales Policy.

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Amar

Thanks for reply. Few questions and comments in bold as below please.

1. Munich to Salzburg - seat reservation not required on Eurocity and Railjet train.--> Does this apply to both Munich airport and Munich Hbf station as starting point?

2. Salzburg to Zell Am See - Regional Express train only seat reservation not required. Pass Not valid on S Bahn train. --> Do you mean for this route i can only take Regional Express train? Which transport company is that when you say Regional Express train? I see online that Regional Express and S Bahn are both operated by OBB. So why is it that pass is not valid on S Bahn?

3. Zell Am See to Budapest - Zell Am See to Vienna - seat reservation not required on regional experess and Railjet train.--> I will be travelling from Zell am See to Budapest but you indicated additional sector Zell am See to Vienna. I am confused! Do you mean I have to travel from Zell am See to Vienna first before getting to Budapest??

Thanks!

Anna

Hi Amar

In addition, I just did a quick search on Rail Europe app and found some discrepancies.

For all my above mentioned routes in my first post, you did not mentioned it is mandatory to make reservations for any of the routes. However, the Rail Europe app tells me it is MANDATORY to make seat reservation for Zell am See to Budapest and Budapest to Vienna. Please see attached screenshot and advise accordingly. Appreciate if you can provide accurate information. I have no idea which to believe when you tell me seat reservations are not mandatory but the app tells me otherwise.

Hello Anna,

Thanks for the reply.

- Munich to Salzburg - there are only trains from Munich HBF. There are no trains for Salzburg from Munich Airport.

- Salzburg to Zell An See - you can only take regional train as the pass is not valid on S Bahn train in Austria.

- Zell Am See to Budapest - There are no direct trains hence you need to break your journey and travel from Zell Am See to Vienna and Vienna to Budapest.

You can follow the seat reservation as mentioned in the above reply as it is checked on the system. The App you are using is Eurail Pass and we cannot comment on it as it is not our company app.

Hope this helps!
