eurail Austria - Switzerland Pass

I am planning to travel to Austria & Switzerland. We are family with 2 children aged 13 and 9. We would be staying 3 days in austria and plan to leave vienna to interlaken by train. We would be staying in Interlake for 4 days and then would stay 2 days in lucern and planning to travel through train to lucern. we will then travel to zurich from lucern. Kindly suggest whether we need to buy Eurail Austria - Switzerland Pass or we buy austria and swiss pass separately. Thank you Umar

Hello Umar,

Thanks for your question.

I would suggest that you purchase a Swiss Travel Pass since most of your travel would be in Switzerland. For the Austrian sector you could purchase point to point tickets rather than a pass.

The Swiss Travel Pass would give you the following benefits:

Children below 16 years are free if accompanied by the adults having a Swiss Pass. We issue a Swiss family card for children

With a Swiss Travel Pass you can travel free within Switzerland on the STS (Swiss Travel System) network on trains, buses and boats. Also with a Swiss Pass you would get discounts on mountain excursions within Switzerland. These discounts can only be availed locally by showing your Swiss Pass to the ticketing office in Switzerland.

Keep in mind that seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will avail pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass.

With a Swiss Travel Pass you can travel free on intercity trains within Switzerland.

To purchase the pass click “Here”.

Hope this helps!!!

Thank you very much Anthony for your information, If I purchase 2 adult swiss pass then the children can travel for free as part of the family,

Is this swiss pass same in Eurail or is it different.

Kindly reply. Thank you in advance.

Hello Umar,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes the children can travel free as long as they are accompanied by a parent. Seat would have to be reserved on Scenic trains as seats are limited.

Switzerland features 2 main networks – the ‘ basic’ network and the ‘ Swiss Travel System’ network. The basic network includes all major railway connections and boat companies to major cities and tourism areas, plus different bonuses in Switzerland.

The Swiss Travel System network includes the basic railroads, urban transportation systems, postal buses and all major mountain railways/cable cars. The Eurail Pass covers only the basic network.

The Eurail Pass covers the ‘basic’ network

The Swiss Pass covers the 'Swiss Travel System’ network.

Hope this helps!!!

Hello Umar,

Thanks for your question.

If you have select the Swiss Family Card option on the website, you will receive it along with the Swiss Travel Pass. If you haven’t select the Swiss Family Card on the website, you would have to pick it up once in Switzerland from the nearest railway station.

Yes the Swiss Travel Pass will cover intercity train travel but you would have to validate if first.

You would receive 50 % dicounts on the Mt. Titlis cable car ride with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Hope this helps!!!

I cannot comment on another website. The night train from Vienna to Zurich on our website is a Euronight train and you would receive pass holder fares for this journey.
